Jiujiang University is a comprehensive public university authorized by the Chinese Ministry of Education, enrolling students from 30 provinces of China with many different backgrounds. Its history can be traced back to 1901 when it existed as Danforth Hospital Nursing School.

Jiujiang University is located in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province of the People’s Republic of China. Its advantageous location with profound history and culture provides Jiujiang University with a rich cultural and academic atmosphere.

Jiujiang University has four beautiful campuses covering an area of about 184 hectares with a total space of buildings being 780,000 square meters. There are over 30,000 full-time Chinese students, 100 foreign students, 1683 full-time teachers, 21 faculties or colleges offering a total of 159 programs and a library collecting over 2.46 million books. Jiujiang University is one of the 25 Chinese Language Education Centres approved by Office of Overseas Chinese Affairs under the State Council of P. R. China. Jiujiang University has been entitled to enrolling overseas students and established collaborative relationship with universities of more than 10 countries around the world.

   The School of Basic Medical Science(SBMS)the former Jiujiang Medical College, under Jiujiang University, locates in downtown by the beautiful Gantang Lake in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, P.R.China.    
   The history of the SBMS can be traced back to 1901 when it existed as Danforth Hospital Nursing School founded by Ms Mary Stone. In 1951 the nursing school merged into a newly set-up medical school called the Jiangxi Third Provincial Physician's School. The school changed its name to Jiujiang Physician School in 1955 and then Jiujiang Medical College of Higher Education in 1958. In 2002, Jiujiang Medical College merged with other three schools as a part of Jiujiang University. In 2008, Jiujiang University Medical Center set up, at the same time, Jiujiang Medical College rename to SBMS. During the past 100 more years the college has produced more than 20,000 physicians, nurses and health-related professionals. At present, SBMS has 1,800 students in campus including over 100 international students as well as 100 staff members, among whom there are 18 full professors and 24 associate professors, 7 backbone teachers of provincial level, 7 of doctor’s degree, 30 of master’s degree and 7 master supervisors.
   SBMS offers five-year programs in medicine and anesthesiology, four-year programs in pharmacy and medical ecsomatics, leading to bachelor degree. In addition, three-year training programs of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, medical laboratory, medical imaging, health information management and combination of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine are taught. They are three one degree courses, basic medical sciences, pharmacy and preventive medicine, and one provincial key subject, the anatomy and histo-embryology.
   The college administrative departments including: School Office, Teaching Affairs Department, Students Affairs Department and Comsomol Committee. There are 10 staff departments and two centers, Medical Lab Center and Medical Science Research Center.
   SBMS has established a provincial first-class medical science research center (with the Institute of New Medicine Science Research), composed of a Jiangxi Province Key Laboratory, the Systematic Biology Clinical Application Laboratory, the Schistosomiasis Prevention and Treatment Research Institute, Lushan Plants Medical Institute together with Pathology and Forensic Identification? Research Center. Parallelling with the research center an advanced laboratory center coexists. It consists of the Basic Medical Laboratory which has been granted as Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center in Jiangxi Province and the Integrated Pharmaceutical Laboratory built by both the central and local governments as unique and advantage laboratory. Teaching equipment and environmental conditions has reached the requirements of the undergraduate teaching assessment by the Education Ministry. The medical library in Lufeng campus and the affiliated hospital serve for teaching and research activities. Many more facilities such as computer laboratory, multimedia hall and vocal laboratory can be shared with the university.
   SBMS has been actively involved in rural medical education reform the fruits of which including more than 20 projects of provincial and ministerial level such as Reform on the Five-year Medical Education and Study on the Community-based & Rural-based Health Personnel Training Mode and also 5 provincial and ministerial level achievement awards on teaching reforms. At the same time, SBMS has vigorously carried out scientific research in the past five years on over 40 research projects of provincial and ministerial level. Under the leadership of Jiujiang University, we are presently involved in local economic development research programs as in theses cases: our schistosomiasis prevention study group is participating in Poyang Lake Ecological Economy Research Center; our biomedical research group is attached to the Yangtze River Industrial Development Research Center.
   In the past 10 years we have made a great progress in foreign exchange and cooperation. SBMS has sent more than 60 staff to the United States, Canada, Australia, Thailand and also Twaiwan, Hong Kong and Macao to participate in international academic conferences. We are made training visits to the United States and the Yale University School of Medicine Gene Research Center and started the friendly and cooperative relations. We are the member of the International Community-oriented Medical Education Network Organization and member of China Medical Board.
